Friday Tickets Officially Sold Out

Tickets for Friday (2/17) are officially sold out. This is extremely exciting for us – it means that we will have a full day’s activities and plenty of people to take advantage of the speakers and provisions we are planning for.

We are already getting a few requests for tickets. There isn’t a waiting list but we plan on releasing a few more tickets between now and the event. Sometimes tickets are returned and not all of our sponsors/supporters might plan to use their tickets. The *BEST* way to grab ticket at this point is to (1) grab a sponsorship – any level – will still get you the ticket package which covers Friday or (2) Keep your eyes peeled on this site and our twitter account (@wordcampmiami) for the latest news… if any tickets officially are available, you’ll hear from our social networks first.

Schedule For Friday, February 17th

Note: Unknown to the public, it’s been a wild ride for the past few weeks. Long story short is that University of Miami could not provide us it’s facilities on Friday and we had to move WordCamp to another venue. Instead of University of Miami, WordCamp Miami FOR FRIDAY ONLY will be held at:

Miami Marriott Dadeland
9090 S. Dadeland Boulevard
Miami, Florida 33156 USA

PLEASE make a note of this. We don’t want anyone showing up on the University of Miami campus on Friday (although we are still using their facilities on Saturday Feb. 18th). Please also note that if you plan to park at the hotel, there may be a small parking or valet fee. We will post all information on our location page shortly.

So what’s in store for WordCamp Miami on Friday, February 17th?

Here’s the planned schedule:

8:00am – Registration
8:30am – Workshops start
1:00pm – Lunch
2:30pm – Session Track, Happiness Bar, Get Hired Bar
6:00pm – Closing Time

Friday is devoted to WordPress beginners, but all are invited. We are currently planning a full day. 8am to 5:30pm. The morning will be devoted to a workshop type of format. In the afternoon we will be having some hand-picked sessions especially designed for those to get up to speed on WordPress and to make the most of our main day on Saturday. Although we will have sessions for beginners on Saturday, Friday is really the day for newbies.

Knowledge Bar

For Friday we will be holding a Knowledge Bar with several WordPress pros on hand to try to answer any specific questions you might have on WordPress and try to answer any questions not covered in the workshops (there will be a lot of attendees present, so please make sure to give those at the bar some extra love and consideration! They’ll need it! ).

Get Hired Bar

For those interested in finding work or looking for WordPress or web-related talent, we will have a station especially for you. We are working on the details of this, so more information to come.

Food

No matter how hard you want to deny it, you can’t focus and learn on an empty stomach. We are seeing if we can provide lunch on Friday – otherwise we will allot enough time for people to visit one of the many local restaurants in the area.

Limited Time Offer On Tickets

Starting tomorrow (Jan 19th) cost for two-day tickets will be $30. But the point might be moot, since we are close to SELLING OUT FRIDAY. So you might want to grab your tickets now!

Calling All Speakers! Deadline marked for Jan 27th!

We’ve gotten an amazing amount of speaker applications so far for WordCamp Miami, but turns out have the ability to accomodate more speakers than initially thought. Our venue accommodations for Friday have changed (more info on that soon) – actually expanded to allow more potential attendees and possibly an additional track or workshop. Therefore we want to make one last call for potential speakers… from the pros to maybe someone who wants to share some knowledge.

Of course, we look for any WordPress or blogging related topics. This is a WordCamp after all. However, if you happen to be an expert in a related technology that’s cool too. Here’s a list of potential subjects that might give you some idea and not all are directly WordPress related:

  • WordPress Multi-Site
  • Responsive Web Design
  • HTML5
  • CSS
  • General Site Design
  • UI/UX Topics
  • Legal Topics Dealing With Blogging or Web Development
  • Javascript/jQuery

Please submit an application as soon as possible if you are interesting in becoming a part of the biggest WordCamp in Miami (dare I say the biggest WordCamp in the SouthEast?)

The Three-Day Gameplan

Since the first official event in Miami in 2010, single day WordCamps were the norm. Held on Saturdays – start early, long day, and by 6pm sessions ended and you were heading to happy hour. This year we are going for THREE days. Yep, that’s right. Three days. But as huge as that might sound, it’s also a fact that each day is different and many WordCamp attendees most likely won’t be going to all three.

Multi-day events like WordCamp as you can imagine are significantly more complex to plan. It takes a lot of hard work and volunteers to pull it off. One of the reasons why we are going for it this year is because of the increase in attendance in the past two years (250 in 2010, 360 in 2011 – both sold out) and we now have a better volunteer structure to help support running a multi-day event.

So what’s our gameplan? Read below and offer your feedback:

Friday – This day is priamrily dedicated to WordPress newbies with little or no experience w/ WordPress and will contain workshops with near one-on-one training and help getting started with WordPress. We will have dedicated instructors and a “course” laid out for the day. Although it will be a shorter day, it will be packed with information. The goal here is get newbies ready for Saturday.

Saturday – The big day. The main event. If you have been to a past one-day WordCamp, then you know the drill. A variety of topics over three tracks (we will announce those tracks soon). Lunch will be provided. There will be t-shirts. There will be an after-party. New to WordCamp Miami though – we will have a Knowledge Bar (sometimes called a Happiness Bar). Very proud of that – we are now in there with the big boys (of WordCamps).

Sunday – Winding down WordCamp Miami, we are working out the details on what happens on this day. Depending on certain factors, we might have a developers BBQ lunch and/or a general unconference session. Since Monday is a US Holiday, we can still take the time to hang out on Sunday before everyone has to go home or hop on a plane.

What you think? What would you like to see at WordCamp Miami 2012?
