Guide For Sunday (March 18th)

Sunday, March 18th is an awesome day at WordCamp Miami. Use this guide to get all the information you need for a full day of learning, networking and fun!

This page is full of useful information. Please read it carefully! It contains important information about what to do before coming, where to go, and what to expect over the weekend.

Before You Attend

Register Your Vehicle!

Parking is free HOWEVER YOU MUST REGISTER YOUR VEHICLE.

You can register your vehicle on or after Thursday March 15.

You only need to register ONCE for the whole weekend. Here’s how:

  1. Before attending the conference click here to register your vehicle
    (Chrome Desktop Users: Please try another browser.)
  2. Fill in the license plate # and information about your vehicle (this information will be kept private and only to be used by FIU Parking Department).
  3. Once you register your vehicle DO NOT HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN FOR ANY OTHER DAYS. One time register will cover you for the entire conference.
  4. If you bring a different vehicle on different days, you’ll need to use the link again and register the different vehicle.

Get on Our Slack Channel and Social Media

Important updates such as last minute schedule changes, lunch announcements, etc. will be broadcast on Slack and Twitter.

What to Bring

  • Sweater or Jacket, Umbrella

Lunch and some coffee will be provided but this is Spring Break at FIU so Starbucks and other restaurants will be closed. Plan accordingly.

How to Get to FIU

Directions

Since the main entrance off of SW 8th St will be closed as well as the exit from the Turnpike eastbound to 8th St, exit the Turnpike at SW 40th Street (Bird Road) which is south of FIU.

From Florida’s Turnpike

Exit the turnpike at SW 40th Street and proceed to SW 117th Ave. Take SW 117th Ave North from 40th Street to SW 17th St. Turn right onto SW 17th Street to enter the FIU campus. Continue past the first stop sign and then you will see the big football stadium on your right. Turn left onto East Campus Circle (aka SW 113th Ave) at the stadium. This will take you to the Panther Parking Garage (PG-3) and P9 parking lot near the College of Business (CBC).

From the Palmetto Expressway

Exit SW 24th Street east until you reach SW 117th Street. Take SW 117th Ave North from 24th Street to SW 17th St. Turn right onto SW 17th Street to enter the FIU campus. Continue past the first stop sign and then you will see the big football stadium on your right. Turn left onto East Campus Circle (aka SW 113th Ave) at the stadium. This will take you to the Panther Parking Garage (PG-3) and P9 parking lot near the College of Business (CBC).

We have reserved free STUDENT parking in Lot 9 and Panther Parking Garage (PGP, also called PG3).

DO NOT  PARK IN ADMIN OR FACULTY & STAFF SPACES.

Registration

Registration opens at 8:30 a.m. in the lobby of the CBC building. The CBC building is located right next to the parking lot. There will be signs directing you straight to the building where you will find the registration table. Please bring a picture ID for registration. PLEASE BE PATIENT AS WE EXPECT A SOLD OUT CROWD. 

If you have a “Learn JavaScript Deeply” ticket, you must register prior to attending the track.

There will be no walk-ins and no tickets sold at the door.

Tracks

Everyone must attend the Opening Remarks at 8:30 a.m in the CBC building, Room 155 (The “How To” Track Room). Following opening remarks proceed to the location for your track:

  • Business/Micro-MBA Track (CBC 155) – same room as Closing Remarks
  • Users Track (CBC 232) – Upstairs, follow the signs
  • Learn JavaScript Track (RDB 1100) – in the Law Building next to the CBC building
  • Kids Workshop (RB 120 for Registration) – this building is the furthest from the parking lot and requires you to go straight through the College of Business (CBC) area.

Each of these buildings is clearly labeled in the Venue Map above.

Breakfast

Einstein Bros bagels and coffee will be provided during registration in the CBC courtyard. Supplies are limited, so if you desire extra food/coffee or have a special diet please bring something with you.

Lunch

We are providing lunch for all our attendees at 12:30 pm. Lunch will be held at the CBC courtyard. There will be multiple stations to get food – please be aware that there might be shorter lines in other stations.

Kid’s and parents will be provided their own lunch in their workshop Saturday and Sunday.

Pollo Tropical will be served – there will be a chicken, pork, and veggie option along with soda and water. We will have a VERY limited third option of vegan food (we’ll update this post when the exact items are finalized).

Afternoon Snack/Coffee

As per tradition, we will provide Nitrogen Ice Cream at the end of the lunch period. We will also have a “coffee bar” this year with additional coffee delivered near the end of lunch.

Closing Remarks

We have a very special 10th anniversary version of closing remarks at 4:45pm in CBC 155 room (where we held the opening remarks, and the room that holds the business track for the day). Be prepared for prizes and surprises!


WiFi

FIU has provided us access to their WiFi network using the following credentials:

User: WCMIA
Password: WordPress10

Network: FIU_SECUREWiFi

  1. Choose FIU_SECUREWiFi network (an unencrypted and unsecured connection to the Internet)
  2. Log in with the credentials shown above

Some conference attendees with managed systems might be unable to connect to FIU_SECUREWiFi because they lack administrative access to their machines. In those cases, they can use the same credentials on FIU_WiFi.

Backup Network: FIU_WiFi

  1. Choose FIU_WiFi network
  2. After connecting, you will be redirected to network.fiu.edu once you open up their browser.
  3. Click on the conference tab at the top, input the conference credentials into the form, and click Login.
  4. Enter the credentials shown above
  5. After a brief wait, you will be redirected to fiu.edu and will have internet connectivity at that point.

Extreme Backup: FIU_WiFi using Guest access

If for some reason you are not able to use the provided credentials you can access as a visitor by creating a temporary visitor account and registering your device before you will be allowed to connect onto the internet. Just follow the direction below to gain access:

  1. Choose FIU_WiFi network
  2. Logging in as a visitor:
    1. Create a Guest ID and password (ID must be your telephone number)
    2. Log on with your Guest credentials. Do not close the browser until you have been redirected.

Please note that your Guest ID is available for 24 hours. During this time, you may log in to multiple devices with these credentials.
